There are two major commercial carpet flooring types avaliable – broadloom and modular:
Broadloom carpet gets its name from the large machines used it its manufacture which, although once were handheld, are now usually controlled by computers. Commonly 3.66 metres wide, its continuous coverage is ideal for larger spaces where fewer joins means the carpet will have a ‘seamless’ look. Fewer seams also means increased longevity as there are fewer vulnerable points in the carpet.
Broadloom carpet is ideal for grander applications such as hotel lobbies, suites or some offices spaces.
Modular carpet is also known as ’tile carpet’ and, as its name suggests, is very versatile and a more modern option than broadloom carpet. It is made from inserting tufts of material into a bitumen or PVC compound which is then applied to a canvas backing. This kind of carpet is favoured by designers for its wide range of colours and patterns. It is also far more resilient than broadloom carpet as damaged tiles can be easily removed and replaced.
This is a fantastic choice for office spaces or classrooms.
There are three major techniques in carpet production, which are again suitable for different applications.
Woven
This is the classic carpet style. Woven carpets are typically made from 80% wool and 20% manmade fibres. It is tough, luxurious and more expensive than other options. The weaving process in production is very time-consuming but results in a product that is far superior in terms of looks and strength than other carpet types. The weaving process also opens up almost endless possibilities for patterns and shapes.
Needle Punched
Needle punched carpet is made using barbed felting needles to punch bating into a central spun fabric, which is then attached to a backing material. This kind of carpet can be printed or embossed and is very water resistant making it great for harsh environments, both indoors and outdoors.
Tufted
Tufted carpets are made using multi-needle sewing machines that stitch pile yarn into a pre-fabricated backing. They are available in both loop and cut-pile varieties and can be made extremely quickly, making them far cheaper than woven carpets. Virtually all tufted carpets are made in a 3.66m wide broadloom format.
